Ring the Bell - It's Time to Play Family Values Hypocrisy!

Great, now we will have endless sounds bites explaining some Evangelical Republican definition of what "sex" is... to be followed by weeks of sermons by Mitt the Mormon on extra-marital affairs --

And now this...

WASHINGTON: Randall Tobias, head of the Bush administration's foreign aid programs, abruptly resigned after his name surfaced in an investigation into a high-priced call-girl ring, said two people in a position to know the circumstances of his departure.

It was Tobias' own decision to resign Friday, according to one of the people, who said the issue came up only in the past day or so. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still under way.

Tobias submitted his resignation a day after he was interviewed by ABC News for an upcoming program about an alleged prostitution service run by the so-called D.C. Madam.

ABC reported on its Web site late Friday that Tobias confirmed that he had called the Pamela Martin and Associates escort service to have women come to his condo and give him massages. More recently, Tobias told the network, he has been using a service with Central American women.

Tobias, 65, who is married, told ABC there had been "no sex" during the women's visits to his condo.

I'd have more to say but I can't stop laughing... (I'm also out of time tonight) - Conservatives are free to stammer and sputter some spin on this, but regardless -- this administration seems determined to do its darndest to get a Democrat elected to the White House next November.... and for once in the last 7 years, much to their chagrin I'm sure, they're actually succeeding at something.

UPDATE I: Although the link to Tobias' bio page at the USAID.gov website retuns a "file not found" error this cached copy of the bio page dated Apr 22, 2007 22:23:03 GMT reports Tobias is a Deputy Secretary of State who reports directly to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

He was confirmed as USAID Administrator by the U.S. Senate on March 29, 2006 and sworn in on March 31, 2006. He continues to report to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and holds the rank of Deputy Secretary of State.

Update II: Tobias checks out Connie's legs

Paul Hamilton:

Well at least they weren't call BOYS like Gary Studds...

/sarcasm

cirby:

Let's see...

Republican gets caught in sex scandal.

Resigns.

Democrat gets caught in sex scandal.

Didn't resign.

Yeah, no difference there.

Nice stammer and sputter!

Paul Hamilton:

Cirby: The voters of MA had the opportunity to "fire" Studds on several occasions and did not do so. What more endorsement could you ask?

And one more thing -- I'd still much rather have a politician who was fooling around sexually than fooling around with my liberties and with the lives of American soldiers.

engineer:

The reason that a Democrat caught in a similar situation doesn't quit is because the he knows that his constituents don't care about family values. That is why Gerry Studds didn't resign, he knew that the average
democratic voter has the same 'non family values' as he did. Therefore when a Democrat gets caught, he can't be a hypocrit, as he see nothing wrong with what he did.

That is why Republicans resign. The know they have done wrong.

It all boils down to a difference in morality. And I would classify it as more along Conservative/Liberal than Republican/Democrat.

engineer:

BTW, the format of the comment area is shaping up; much easier on the eyes.

Steve Crickmore:

Tobias was most well-known until now, in publicizing the Bush's idioysncratic ABC approach /Abstinence, Be Faithful ( and maintaining but downplaying the role of Condoms) in the global campaign to fight aids. It's a shame to waste this catchy State Department slogan.. Since Tobias says there was "no sex" maybe we could just emend the slogan ABC and add 'D' for (District of Columbia ) and 'E' for escorts.

civil behavior:

You know what I love about repukes?

Their ability to be so dang hypocritical.

Do as I say, not as I do.

From getting massages (no sex)to getting paid off (no pay to play) they are incontrovertibly pushing the "family values" line the whole way.

At least Bill Clinton isn't the "holier than thou" preacher. When he got caught at least he hadn't been pimping the "family values" line the whole time.

Cirby, engineer.......find yourselves a new line. The old one just doesn't play well in Peoria anymore.

Paul Hamilton:

Engineer: If the Pubs are the party of family values why have all of their major candidates for the presidency except Mitt been divorced while none of the Dems' candidates have?

Just sayin'...

engineer:

Civil, you are correct. Rebukes (since you use agrumentum ad hominem, it means you really can't argue the merits of your position, and have to rely on childish name calling) are hypocritical because they generally have a absolute value of morals. When they break these, they are seen as hypocrits.

Democrats, more specifically Liberals, don't have an absolute set of morals, rather a relativistic set, that allows them to justify any particular situation without appearing hypocritical. That is why somebody like William Jefferson doesn't see any reason to resign, and his constituents voted him back in office.

Paul, maybe adultry among Democrat is acceptable, therefore not worthy of divorce. It is just another alternate lifestyle.

From Pew Research (Sorry I'm not adept at linking)
"Yet the largest partisan gap comes in views of a presidential candidate who "had an extramarital affair in the past." Fully 62% of Republicans say they would be less likely to support such a candidate, compared with 25% of Democrats (and 36% of independents).

It's seems like adultry is not beig deal to a Democrat.

engineer:

...not a big..

(housekeeping -- here's engineer's Pew Research quote again with assocated links added.)

(engineer, and all other commenters - feel free to email for html help )

engineer:

Thank you very much Lee! I use my computer for business all day, but I always relied on my daughter to explain anything about the internet. Now that she's married and moved away, I'm just an old dinosaur.

civil behavior:

Engineer,

You can't get away with it, sorry.

Hypocrisy is RAMPANT in the repuke party. And I'm too old to worry about some similar old geyser trying to tag me with ad hominen. Puke is the operative word, applies perfectly.

As for values the repukes have shown they certainly haven't cornered the market on values. At least Democrats know full well that man is fallible and they also understand that one doesn't stand a chance of credibility when one "preaches" values all the while screwing the mistress.

We simply don't believe you guys anymore. NO more credibility. TOO many lies. You've got a lot of making up to do.

Get started by admitting to your party's dirty ways and corruption. The best road to recovery is admitting the mistake. Sounds like you've got a long way to go.

By the way how's that surge working out for you. What was it today?.......Fifty people were killed and another 70 were wounded in a car bombing in the holy Iraqi Shi'ite city of Kerbala

Heres the latest since the escalation started. Good luck spinning this lie. http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L28747.htm

I suppose this would "family values" if you're talking about the family of Larry Flynt, Hugh Hefner or Bob Guccione. Stuff like this Tobias thing is too funny to even describe. You know who's going to be a punchline of jokes on Jay Leno this coming week.

engineer:

I guess since argumentun ad hominem didn't work for you, you'll try throwing in a red herring with your surge statement.

So, in reading your post, it is better not to have any standards or morals, since 'nobody can keep them anyhow', then to have standards to at least strive towards, even though we often fail.

It doesn't matter if you''re an old 'geyser' or not, civil behavior is something everybody can practice,

civil behavior:

Engineer,

I didn't say it was better not to have any standards or morals. I said man was fallible. But more importantly I said that it was much more destructive to claim you are upholding family values while screwing the mistress.

Thus it is the age old game of republicans trying to spin and twist the words of those of us who obviously understand the importance of linking moral behavior to civil behavior given there is a modicum of mans fallibilty but making no excuses for consequence versus the deceit of spinning hypocritical behavior into socially acceptable behavior carrying the biblical ball all the while practicing immoral behavior.

Now that's the cirque du soleil!
