Social Conservatives Back Rudy

The Politico story:

Widespread perceptions that Giuliani is the most electable Republican in this year's field are driving his support among social conservatives, according to the analysis by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

If the trend holds, this apparent willingness to support a candidate who fails what were once regarded as litmus-test issues would mark a landmark shift in the political behavior of a constituency that has been a pillar of the modern GOP. Already the shift is spurring sharp debate among prominent Christian conservative leaders, some of whom warn that Giuliani backers are abandoning core principles.

If Fred Thompson enters the race, this could change very quickly. But the more significant thing is that it seems Romney's desperate efforts to reinvent himself have failed completely.

I'm beginning to think Thompson will have less of an impact than believed.

The reasons he's now in hiding, apparently afraid to stand up and speak in public on the issues and be judged will, I suspect, become painfully obvious to the right once the guy actually tries to compete head-to-head on the issues.

So far he's built a campaign on press releases and blog posts. The disappointment on the right that results when he actually tries to campaign will, imho, be devastating.

Paul Hamilton:

You might be right. He's sort of like the phenom that everybody talks about on draft day but then from the moment he makes his first pitch or pass or slap shot in anger, it's all downhill from there.

It really makes you wonder if there's any substance there. Since his career in the senate was hardly the stuff of political legend, I suspect not.
