Throw Away the Key on Libby

Updated: Libby sentenced to 30 months in prison.

Cheney's former chief of staff was found guilty of lying, obstructing probe.

libby.jpgFormer White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby was sentenced to 2 ½ years in prison Tuesday for lying and obstructing the CIA leak investigation.

Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, stood calmly before a packed courtroom as a federal judge said the evidence overwhelmingly proved his guilt.

"People who occupy these types of positions, where they have the welfare and security of nation in their hands, have a special obligation to not do anything that might create a problem," U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton said.[...]

Walton fined Libby $250,000 and placed him on probation for two years following his release from prison. Walton did not immediately address whether Libby could remain free pending appeal.

Three years in prison isn't enough:

Former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's hopes of avoiding prison in the CIA leak case began to dim Tuesday as a federal judge ruled he could face a longer sentence because the investigation he obstructed was so serious.

Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, is the highest-ranking official convicted of a crime since the Iran Contra affair.

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald wants to put Libby in prison for up to three years because the investigation he was convicted of obstructing -- the leak of a CIA operative's identity -- was so important.

"We need to make the statement that the truth matters ever so much," Fitzgerald said.

It should come as no surprise that Libby's lawyers are trying to get him off with no jail time. Letting the Bush administration avoid responsibility for their crimes and atrocities is absolutely the wrong message. I'm sure law-and-order "get tough on crime" Republicans appreciate that -- we're talking about a felony committed by a high-ranking White House staff member.

You can expect the conservative corruption clan to squeal like little piggies over this.

Plame was covert after all, you know - lying right wing bloggers aside - it's a fact.

Steve Crickmore:

When are these loyal staffers going to realize that loyalty only runs one way for Bush and Cheney, who called Libby "one of the finest individuals I've ever known," in a `Fox News Sunday' interview in January, but in the nearly six weeks since his close friend and former chief of staff was convicted of lying and obstructing an investigation, Vice President Dick Cheney had not once spoken to I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby.
"Well, there hasn't been occasion to do so," Cheney said in an interview on CBS's "Face the Nation." I guess Cheney has been too busy giving interviews..To think Libby is going to spend 30 months, 'in the slammer' protecting this guy.

jeff:

If he is not pardoned by dubya this november or december he certainly will be pardoned as dubya leaves office.

Lets face it though, there are several others that should be there sharing a cell with him, namely his boss Dickie.

You're right Jeff - and I'd put money on when dubya leaves office -- after the November 2008 elections. I suspect dubya's handlers won't let him pardon Libby before then.
