Keep Re-arranging Those Deck Chairs!

MSNBC story:

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Friday he has decided to replace the chairman and vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff rather than have them go through contentious renomination hearings before Congress.

Speaking to reporters, and referring to the debate over the war in Iraq, Gates said he envisioned "a confirmation process that would not be in the best interest of the country" were he to renominate Marine Gen. Peter Pace as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Adm. Ed Giambiastiani as vice chairman.

So long as the policies remain the same, changing the boss won't matter...

Steve Crickmore:

'Googling' a few of statements by Mullen,he doesn't appear to be as extreme as Peter Pace. When Mullen was asked whether the effort at gathering information on pirates and terrorists would be a distraction from the US Navy's main mission of fighting wars, he was emphatic: "No, you pay me not to go to war. You pay me to prevent war. This is all part of the deterrence of war.

Bush, is still at the helm, but perhaps Gates as he gets some of his men in position, can steer 'the decider' away from doing something crazy like launching a pre-emptive, full-scale attack on Iran, which I'm sure Cheney and Abrams are 'itching' to do.

Paul Hamilton:

I hope you're right, but everything I've seen has shown that Bush will continue to be the Decider -- or the sockpuppet of the REAL Decider, as the case may be -- and all these figureheads become are fall guys when everything turns to crap.

Steve Crickmore:

Paul, I would agree that Gates doesn't seem to have made much of an impression on Bush...(maybe that was part of the deal why he was nominated )and the President and Cheney have leaned on the Generals and Joint Chiefs of Staff like Pace pretty sucessfully overcoming their opposition to the surge for example: 'Joint Chiefs Advise Change In War Strategy. Leaders Seek No Major Troop Increase, Urge Shift in Focus to Support of Iraqi Army" December 14, 2006.
