Cheney Defies Classified Info Search

MSNBC story:

Vice President Cheney's office has refused to comply with an executive order governing the handling of classified information for the past four years and recently tried to abolish the office that sought to enforce those rules, according to documents released by a congressional committee yesterday.

Since 2003, the vice president's staff has not cooperated with an office at the National Archives and Records Administration charged with making sure the executive branch protects classified information. Cheney aides have not filed reports on their possession of classified data and at one point blocked an inspection of their office. After the Archives office pressed the matter, the documents say, Cheney's staff this year proposed eliminating it.

The claim that the VP is not a part of the executive branch is preposterous. He's lying, he knows it, and he doesn't care because he has considered himself above the law from day one. It would be nice if congress would order him to follow the law and if he continues to refuse, then it's contempt of congress and we can haul him in to answer to the charges and open up the whole can of worms.

But who am I kidding. That would require courage and fortitude -- something which the Dems have sadly lacked ever since Cheney and his sock puppet took office.

Lee Ward:

From the article: "Cheney's office made the case that it is not covered because the vice president under the Constitution also serves as president of the Senate and therefore has both legislative and executive duties."

That's priceless, seeing Cheney trying to wrap his office in the protection of the Constitution.

Steve Crickmore:

Bush/Cheney supporters, such as those on Wizbang classic, were having the vapors that Berger as af former National securty advisor to Clinton, only recieved a hefty fine and suspended sentence for illicitly taking copiesof a couple of documents of Clinton's administration record on terrorism from the National Archives..Now Cheney says we are not going to bother sending copies (or presumably the originals) to the National Archives..It so much simpler when you think your are the king or vice and can ignore any law you wish, and your supporters we chant 'long live Cheney'...

So if Cheney's office is not part of the executive branch he's not next in line for succession should something happen to Pres. Sock Puppet, right?

At times this almost seems like it's headed towards a chilling real life version of the scenario in the movie "V for Vendetta" in which High Chancellor Sutler is squirreled away in an undisclosed bunker somewhere, appearing only on a giant screen, advising his henchman on how best to maintain the highest level of fear and uncertainty in the population.

Lee Ward:

I love how the image of 'Cheney the Bulldog' that the GOP and the White House (they are one-in-the-same now) foisted on Americans has now been replaced by the reality that Cheney is just a major league asshole.

I think Cheney's position is even embarrassing to righty bloggers. I haven't seen any of them try to defend Shooter.
