Senator Schumer explains why all of this matters, in his March 13, 2007 call for Alberto Gonzales' resignation.
The calls for Gonzales's resignation continue, while the appointment of a special prosecutor is considered.
- Yesterday: in Wizbang Blue: Gonzales Serves Up More Whoppers Than Burger King: "For those of you who missed the (full) testimony of Alberto Gonzales before the Judiciary Committee, I'd recommend making the effort to catch it on a C-SPAN rebroadcast. There's simply no way to adequately describe the whole scene: that creepy, evasive visage, calmly churning out falsehood after falsehood. You have to keep reminding yourself--this man is the attorney general of the United States. He is the physical embodiment of an idea. At this point no one, Democrat or Republican, would argue that he is highly qualified to hold the position he now occupies, that he is the obvious choice among America's legions of lawyers to be the attorney general."
- Today in the Chicago Tribune: With no credibility left, Gonzales should resign: "The pressure continues to mount as Gonzales' credibility continues to shrink. His office is supposed to stand for truth and justice. The longer he stays in it, the more he subverts those values."
- Today in the New York Times: Documents Dispute Gonzales' Testimony: "Documents indicate that eight Congressional leaders were briefed about the Bush administration's terrorist surveillance program on the eve of its expiration in 2004, contradicting sworn Senate testimony on Tuesday by Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales."
- Today in the Kansas CIty Star: Gonzales' deceit is a disgrace: "It's time to bring down the curtain on an attorney general who can't seem to tell the truth. He's got all the credibility of an e-mail addressed "treasured sir" and asking for money."
