Much is being said of late about Bill O'Reilly's most recent racist remarks, which I covered last night in a post titled "Bill O'Reilly Surprised That Black People Use Silverware." The story continues to evolve and take on a life of its own.
Now O'Reilly's fellow bigots on the right are using the words of NPR and Fox commentator Juan Williams in defense of O'Reilly. They are quick to mention Williams' NPR affiliation, and usually just as quick to leave off the fact that Williams has also been appearing on Fox News since 1997. No surprise. Their reason for leaving off Williams' Fox News affiliation is obvious -- it underscores the fact that Williams' defense of O'Reilly is nothing more than a fellow Fox News mouthpiece defending a very valuable Fox News property.
They are also conveniently leaving out the fact that Williams himself is a strong critic of modern-day black culture, and that he wrote a book on the subject released in 2006 titled ""Enough: The Phony Leaders, Dead-End Movements, and Culture of Failure That Are Undermining Black America -- and What We Can Do About It." In the book Williams picks up and extends on the polemic introduced a few years ago by comedian/actor Bill Cosby that criticizes modern-day black culture and black political leaders such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.
Yes, the very same Al Sharpton with whom Bill O'Reilly was dining in Harlem when he was shocked to discover black patrons in Sylvia's restaurant weren't eating fried chicken then shoving the chicken bones through their noses and dancing on the tables.
The fact that Juan Williams has risen to O'Reilly's defense smacks of a typical right wing coordinated effort by the conservative media and their army of "flogging-the-left" bloggers. Jim Addison, a right wing writer at our sister site Wizbang who I exposed yesterday shilling for an anti-union lobbyist, went so far as to write a puffy shill piece for Wiliams last night that promotes Williams as a liberal, and conveniently leaves out any mention of Williams' ten year Fox News affiliation. According to Addison, Williams is nothing more than a blue-blooded liberal. Bullshit.
This whole attempt by the conservative media to inject racism back into the American dialog has all the earmarks of a classic right wing move to rile up the slumbering conservative base, slap them into action, and get them agitated and back in the streets with their pitchforks chasing down the colored folks and liberals... and -- let's not forget -- writing checks to the GOP.
Heck, in another week it'll be the first of the month, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if the bulk mailings weren't going out en masse as you read this, with appeals for financial help to stop the mean old libbies and black folks from picking on the likes of poor ol' BillO.
As reported by Larkin earlier today, the Republican Party is absolutely shattered and their fundraising is failing miserably. With Fred Thompson's recent entry into the presidential race we now know that Thompson, the Last Great White hope among the band of fat old white men that call themselves the GOP's best, has been proven out to be nothing more than a mumbling moron who stumbles through speeches as if he's on tranquilizers.
The GOP is imploding and disintegrating right before
our their eyes, and O'Reilly's racist remarks smack of nothing more than desperate, racist 'drum pounding' by the conservative media in an attempt to wake up the GOP's conservative base in America.
I hope all of America wakes up to the divisive race-baiting tactics employed by the people like Bill O'Reilly and moves to put a stop to it once and for all.
