Conservative Christians to Mount Third Party Bid

If you read our site regularly this won't surprise you a bit. Wizbang Blue has been very busy documenting the fracturing failure of the Republican Party over the last few weeks, and now new signs of the GOP's failure are emerging from secret meetings held this last weekend.

The New York Times has more:

Christian Conservatives Consider Third-Party Effort
By David D. Kirkpatrick

Alarmed at the chance that the Republican party might pick Rudolph Giuliani as its presidential nominee despite his support for abortion rights, a coalition of influential Christian conservatives is threatening to back a third-party candidate in an attempt to stop him.

The group making the threat, which came together Saturday in Salt Lake City during a break-away gathering during a meeting of the secretive Council for National Policy, includes Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, who is perhaps the most influential of the group, as well as Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, the direct mail pioneer Richard Viguerie and dozens of other politically-oriented conservative Christians, participants said. Almost everyone present expressed support for a written resolution that "if the Republican Party nominates a pro-abortion candidate we will consider running a third party candidate."

The participants spoke on condition of anonymity because the both the Council for National Policy and the smaller meeting were secret, but they said members of the intend to publicize its resolution. These participants said the group chose the qualified term "consider" because they have not yet identified an alternative third party candidate, but the group was largely united in its plans to bolt the party if Mr. Giuliani became the candidate.

A revolt of Christian conservative leaders could be a significant setback to the Giuliani campaign because white evangelical Protestants make up a major portion of Republican primary voters. But the threat is risky for the credibility of the Christian conservative movement as well. Some of its usual grass-roots supporters could still choose to support even a pro-choice Republican like Mr. Giuliani, either because they dislike the Democratic nominee even more or because they are worried about war, terrorism and other issues.

It's a fascinating look at the disintegration of the Republican Party - like watching a train wreck - it's horrifying and compelling at the same time.

Lee Ward:

You contributed just the other day, and a few weeks ago.

The religious right has been a disgrace to the Christian faith as well, preaching a false political gospel nothing like the Gospel of the Bible. Hopefully the far right will pursue this third party bid and draw very few votes nationwide and really take the wind out of the sails of this false movement of men that falsely claims to be a move of God. Following the recent deaths of Rev. Jerry Falwell and Dr. D. James Kennedy, this could well mark the next major decline for this political movement of some hucksters who hoped to hijack God to justify their own political ambitions and issues.

Saul Thompson:

You guys might be interested to know that reports are showing that Daniel Imperato is the candidate that the Christian Coalition is supporting.

Lee Ward:

Thanks for the tip, Saul! We'll do some sniffing around and report on this shortly - Lee

Lee Ward:

My quick checks into Imperato's background and positions on issues suggest to me that he is not the type of candidate that the evangelicals would want to push as president.

Saul - you mentioned "reports" - do you have a link to any "reports" or can you cite sources? And how did you come to receive this inside info?

Lee, re: Imperato,

A papal suck-up who likes to dress up. Paying big bucks for Catholic "knighthoods" so his wife can be called "Lady of Zenobia" and he can publish the last old queen's encyclicals.

Lee Ward:

I came across that notice. I can't fault the organization - they do good work - poo-bah-ness aside...
