An apparently very determined, and very despondent, John David Roy Atchison (aka JD Roy Atchison, John David R. Atchison, and Roy Atchison), commited suicide today, hanging himself in his cell.
The Detroit Free Press, which has done an excellent job of covering Atchison's arrest and detainment, has these details as of now:
He hanged himself this morning at the federal prison in Milan, where he was taken after trying to commit suicide last month at Sanilac County Jail, authorities said.Officials said Atchison, 53, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., had been housed in solitary confinement and was under close supervision, adding that he had shown no signs of despondency.
I find that statement rather surprising since there were two previous attempts by Atchison to take his own life. It seems to me that they should have been monitoring this guy more closely.
Atchison, who prosecuted civil and criminal matters as an assistant U.S. attorney in Pensacola, was charged with enticing a minor using the Internet and knowingly travelling interstate to engage in illicit sex. He was arrested Sept. 16, a Sunday night, at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. At the time of his arrest, he was carrying a Dora the Explorer doll, hoop earrings and petroleum jelly, prosecutors said.
He initiated an online chat Aug. 29 with a Macomb County Sheriff's detective, who posed as a mother interested in allowing men to have sex with her 5-year-old daughter.
Atchison, who is married to a school teacher and has three children, also was president of the Gulf Breeze Sports Association for soccer, t-ball and other activities.
I'll try to dig up more on this story, so check back this weekend or Monday for further updates
