The Republican leadership isn't quite as bad as the Inquisition, when you could be burned at the stake or waterboarded, if you didn't know the correct number of angels on a pin, not yet, but then these are early days in 'the ideological stuggle' of the 21st century, as Bush refers to it.
Not to be outdone by lunatic, (hey that's what wizbang classic calls him) Pat Roberston's endorsement of 9/11 radio man Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee was courting (you guessed it) the religious right on Pat Robertson's tv network.
Mike Huckabee began with 'the loaves and fishes' parable. "For people of faith, the easiest thing to understand is when God is in it, little is much. We're the people who believe that a little boy with two small fish and five small biscuits fed 5,000 people."
This was Huckabee's preface to the only relevant educational qualification that he thinks he has, and that none of other candidates possess for the American presidency. (A Phd at Harvard, or Stanford.. no, not exactly) From the CBN network.
People look at my record and say that I'm as strong on immigration, strong on terror as anybody. In fact I think I'm stronger than most people because I truly understand the nature of the war that we are in with Islamo fascism. These are people that want to kill us. It's a theocratic war. And I don't know if anybody fully understands that. I'm the only guy on that stage with a theology degree. I think I understand it really well. And know the threat of it is absolutely overwhelming to us.
As Steve Benen states "just how much did the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary teach Huckabee in the 1970s about 21st-century fundamentalist Islam? Here's a wild guess: not much."
And I may be pulling straws but doesn't Huck mean a 'theological' rather than a 'theocractic' war...I don't think we are in a theocracy yet, as much as some people from one party, would like us to to be.
Speaking of Huckabee, since it's rare we speak of him here, digby has an axe to grind with the former Arkansas governor and he doesn't mince words, 'Huckabee Gets Another Free Ride'.
The first fact anyone should know about Mike Huckabee is he is a man so opportunistic and ruthless - and so stupid - he proactively worked to release Wayne Dumond, a serial rapist and murderer, because he felt it would advance his political career.
The truth is that Wayne Dumond was a rightwing cause celebre. They thought Dumond, who was in jail for the rape of a distant cousin of Bill Clinton, was a victim of Clinton's vengeance and may have been innocent
Dumond was released from prison with help from Huckabee. Dumond then went on to do what most serial rapist murderers do... again and again.
It is going to take more than 'loaves and fishes' and a theological degree for Huckabee to overcome his ignorant pandering to whatever is the right wing 'cause celebre' of the moment.
