In fact, the Reagan Administration was a more corrupt and lawless regime than even that of the Nixon-Watergate Administration. 225 members of Reagan Administration left office, many due to scandals resulting in firings, indictments or even convictions. By comparison just nine members of the Nixon Administration were indicted for crimes arising from the Watergate Scandal.
Reagan's Attorney General, Edwin Meese, who tried to cast himself as some sort of moralistic pornography fighter to the political right, actually found himself under investigation by no less than three special prosecutors because he was such a moral hypocrite, and had such poor ethics and personal honesty while in office before he resigned in disgrace.
Both Department Of Housing Secretary Samuel Pierce and Energy Secretary James Watt were brought down in scandals where wealthy contributors were rewarded, leading to the convictions of six Reagan staffers associated with these offices. Watt was also indicted for 24 felonies for his role in Department of Housing And Urban Development grant rigging.
EPA "Superfund" funds were spent in purely political way to help allies of the Reagan Administration with toxic waste problems in their communities that were hurting their re-election hopes.
In the Iran-Contra Arms Scandal, several important Reagan Administration staffers were indicted in a scandal to defraud the U.S. government by selling U.S. military weapons to the radical Islamic government in Iran and using the funds to support terrorist Contras in Nicaragua to bring down the democratically elected leftist government which was not at war with the U.S.
Reagan staffers Lyn Nofziger and Michael Deaver were both indicted and convicted in lobbying scandals.
The Reagan Administration also cost the U.S. an estimated $150 billion dollars by changing what it claimed were "loopholes" in the tax code that resulted in widespread bankruptcy of many real estate development projects that were made with tax breaks under the old tax code, resulting in a huge savings and loan bailout mess.
The Reagan Administration illegally used Department Of Agriculture CCC Funds intended solely for international disaster relief to help Saddam Hussein build a multi-billion dollar military war machine in Iraq during the 1980's Iran-Iraq War. Saddam was able to buy billions of dollars of arms from France and Brazil, thanks to this covert war funding scheme, and it directly contributed to the 1990 invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. In 1991 and 2003, both Republican Bush Administrations hoped to paint Iraq as some huge military threat, yet it was the 1980's Republican Reagan Administration that helped Iraq to build this huge military with the illegal use of Agriculture Department disaster funds.
Now Republican presidential hopefuls paint the violent actions of the international Al Qaeda terrorist organization as some sort of a "war", yet none of the GOP hopefuls condemn the Reagan Administration for helping to both fund and build up the Al Qaeda organization during the Mujahideen battle with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda are only a terrorist threats today because of this support and backing from the Reagan Administration to battle the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
Both Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden were "Frankenstein's monster" creations of the Reagan Administration and illegal and covert war funding schemes. Yet every GOP presidential hopeful only continues to laud praise on Ronald Reagan and claim they are most like him. Horrors if they really are like Reagan.
