Some political pundits say the public's comfort with a candidate is important, and one of the ways that "comfort" factor is measured in election year polls is by polling voters with the question "Is candidate A someone you'd feel comfortable having a beer with?"
In a recent version of one of these polls, Obama comes out ahead:
People would rather barbecue burgers with Barack Obama than with John McCain. While many are still deciding who should be president, by 52 percent to 45 percent they would prefer having Obama than McCain to their summer cookout, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll released Wednesday.
Men are about evenly divided between the two while women prefer Obama by 11 percentage points. Whites prefer McCain, minorities Obama. And Obama is a more popular guest with younger voters while McCain does best with the oldest.
If they asked which candidate is so senile he might catch his necktie on fire while barbecuing I'm sure McCain would win that poll, so don't lose hope, Republicans. Your candidate is bound to be the first choice to some questions.

People really sense that Obama is much more consistently a very nice guy, while avoiding the stiffness of an Al Gore for a top flight intellectual. McCain is a little more uneven in temperment for sure. At times he can be charming and funny, but he can also be caustic and nasty as well. Maybe that's not the greatest reason to elect a president, but it's just one factor that some voters consider.
McCain had to be tough to outlast his captivity in Vietnam, but that's not a skill that always plays well in day to day business. A more genial nature such as that by President Clinton worked well with the American public.

Obama is definitely charismatic and interesting, where McBush is only offering the same as we've had for the last 8 years, warmed over. Signs are still pointing towards a landslide victory for Democrats in November.
McCain's nastiness and explosive temperament will rise up to bite him again sometime before election day, I suspect.
