Jayemay:

I fail to see how taxing the piss out of oil producers will help out "the rest of us." If "Big Oil" is evil as you seem to assume they are, or if they are merely rational business people as I believe they are, then when faced with increased operating costs (in the form of higher taxes,) they will simply pass those costs along to the consumer.

What will go down will be their gross profitablity, which means that everyone who invests in these companies, (including the retirment plans of millions of ordinary working people,) will lose.

TTG:

You are absolutely right Jayemay. The libs don't learn from history at all. They need to go back to the Carter administration and review all the stats on his energy agenda. One of the worst outcomes in any administration (but of course the democrats would like to forget that). Go back and look in Wikipedia or something and refresh your memory (assuming you were old enough to remember the Carter admin). Even though oil profits appear huge, after the costs of transport etc are deducted, they make something like 30% or less I think. Why should they be forced to make less than the percentage they already get? Even retailers mark their stuff up 100% or more and we all seem to look the other way, but talk about oil and there's a double standard. But the democrats don't like capitalism. They want to punish the rich and give the money to the government who in turn wastes it on more government. One has only to look at the postal service, the motor vehicle service, all government agencies, even the friggin cafeteria in the Senate bldg. GAWD and they think they can fix this by taxing the oil company profits. Stupidity beyond belief...but that's the dumbocratic way for ya.

Obama is for the little guy like us?!

Will YOU be attending the fund raiser?
Hollywood megastar to host fundraiser for Obama

"Academy award winning actor George Clooney is set to host a fundraiser for Barack Obama in Switzerland next month.

The event, taking place on the evening of September 2 in Geneva, Switzerland will be split into two parts: a reception and a dinner. According to Obama's National Finance Committee, tickets for the reception where Clooney will speak are going for $1,000, followed by a dinner at the home of NFC member Charles Adams for $10,000 a plate."

Jayemay: "I fail to see how taxing the piss out of oil producers will help out "the rest of us."

You also fail to mention who's suggested "taxing the piss" out of the oil companies. I've heard the suggestion that we have a windfall oil profits tax, and I don't believe there's been a specific number mentioned.

TTG goes for the hat trick: "The libs don't learn from history at all. They need to go back to the Carter administration and review all the stats on his energy agenda."

Yeah, that's specific, mention Carter then wave your arms in the air.

"Even though oil profits appear huge, after the costs of transport etc are deducted, they make something like 30% or less I think."

Huh? Their margin is somewhere around 10% - why don't you get informed before you start babbling

"Will YOU be attending the fund raiser?
Hollywood megastar to host fundraiser for Obama"

And McCain doesn't have big $ fundraisers?

I don't think Obama holding a big-ticket fundraiser fits anyone's definition of "not being for the rest of us", boxpaws -- let's talk about policies as president - not fundraising tactics as a candidate. McCain thinks rich equates to $5 million a year in income. $4 million just doesn't cut it... Obama suggests $250K.

Big difference.

ttg:

Geez Lee you are a diehard lib for sure. I hardly think that just because my statements prove that I am hardly a numbers guru, that my main point was lost on the oil companies low profit thing. As far as going into detail about Carter's energy agenda, one would assume, and frankly after reading your articles EXPECT an enlightened individual like you to already know without further detail, so yeah I'd rather "wave my arm" instead of type. When Carter did his windfall profits tax thing the oil companies said fine we'll stop producing as much in the US. We'll lower production to get out of paying taxes and that's what happened. They went back and produced more in their offshore properties and tracts. The Democrats seem to forget this. This is not about revenue, it's not about oil; it's about anti-capitalism and punishment of the elite class level. And that's the whole enchilada.

Lee Ward[TypeKey Profile Page]:

There's a big difference between 10% and 30%.

Feel free to provide a link to where the oil companies said what you claim they said.

What happened with Carter's windfall profits tax is that the price of gasoline went down.

The price of gasoline went down.

The price of gasoline went down. Is this getting through?

Tell me how that's a bad thing for anybody but the the greedy oil companies and their hand-licking Republican servants...?

ttg:

The global political and resource landscape has changed over the last 30+ years (need I go into detail on that one) = unhealthy dependence on foreign oil - Pursuing pipe dreams that will never replace fuel in our lifetimes; pandering to tree huggers and the fact that Russia and Iran are not our blood brothers have RAISED prices

The global political and resource landscape has changed over the last 30+ = unhealthy dependence on foreign oil - Pursuing pipe dreams that will never replace fuel in our lifetimes; pandering to tree huggers and the fact that Russia and Iran are not our blood brothers have RAISED prices

Is THIS GETTING through?

Time to pray to Obama again.

Lee Ward[TypeKey Profile Page]:

No it's time to ween ourselves off the oil teet - something Republicans won't do. Bush did nothing to move our country away from our dependence on foreign oil.

And that means electing a Democrat to the White House, because John McSame is is same old oil pal -- and he will not serve the interests of the American people, but will help his oil company pals instead.

ttg:

please lee, typical to blame what should have happened over the last couple decades on a republican. Look who walks out and takes a vacation instead of facing our energy crises when we really need them to. Pelosi and the dems. It was a shame that (SC) Jim DeMints intelligent speech to them was yawned out before leaving on their breaks. BE FAIR LEE, NEITHER Party did ANYTHING when they had control of the house through the years it was always put on the back burner. I concur that the republicans are as much to blame which is why I don't like to align with everything they do. I am a conservative not a republican. McCain is just a last resort for me as with most other so called republicans. He's just the lesser of the two evils that will further degenerate our economy and culture. To borrow a commonly used phrase - 'where is the outrage', well i guess we are both exhibiting ours from different perspectives albeit to the same end

Lee Ward:

I'm blaming what should have happened in the last 8 years on George W Bush and the Republicans who controlled Congress until January 2007. Bush and his administration completely miscalculated the outcome of our invasion into Iraq. Rumsfeld and Cheney said it would be all over in 6 months. Bullshit. and Barack Obama knew it was bullshit.

Several months after Democrats won control of Congress in 2006 and took office in January 2007 new CAFE fuel-efficiency standards were passed, raising the MPG requirements for American auto manufacturers.

That DID NOT happen until Democrats took over Congress.

ttg:

Yes I'm glad you mentioned that. 2006... 2 years ago. In 2 years just look at the economic progress we have made! Gee, funny gas prices are up cuz the dems don't wanna drill (they think we can fuel our cars, make carpets, clothing and other products with natural gas instead of petroleum in.. oh.. maybe 6 months, cuz the places they WILL allow WONT produce oil they produce GAS so people like Boone Pickens will get richer than the Bushes), housing market suks, we're financially bailing out everybody under the sun for their stupidity of not understanding unfixed interest rates, pussyfooting around Russia, and oh goody preaching to high school students in New Mexico:

""We are a nation of immigrants," Obama answers.

"The only people can say that they aren't immigrants are the people sitting right here," the Presidential candidate says and points to the tribal leaders.

"There are some families who have been here for 4 or 500 years. They didn't cross the border, the border crossed them."

Oh. Ok good, now incite the immigrants to take further advantage of our system and tax dollars, by encouraging them to expect rights here. If this looks like an economy with promise to you, then my friend you are an ardent socialist, I like to call socialists "sheeple".

I am tired of liberal policies born of fascist ideas brainwashing the people that countless men died fighting for freedom for, and that passionate Christian statesman set up a constitution to protect - FROM the very BIG Government liberals are imposing on us. Giving up personal freedom for the GOOD OF THE STATE. This is exactly what Woodrow Wilson and FDR wanted through the New Deal and the Great Society. Mussolini and Hitler got most of their fascist ideas from AMERICAS LEFT. And what can the liberals give us as reason to follow them?
Al Gore's GLOBAL WARMING SCAM. I rest my case.

Lee Ward[TypeKey Profile Page]:

More uniformed partisan bullshit..

Gas prices are up because the Dems dont' want to drill? Bullshit - Gas prices are up because of instability in the middle east created by George Bush and the Republican band of incompetents who decided to occupy Iraq.

Oil prices took a big jump today because George Bush decided to piss on Putin's leg and move ahead now with Patriot missiles in Poland. I'm not saying that's a bad idea - Patriots in Poland - but quit blaming Democrats for the crap Republicans pull.

The rest of your screed is as idiotic as the previous bullshit posts. You're an uniformed Republican oil-company-loving dipstick and every time you comment your prove that fact --

But thanks for stopping by - we love to have folks like you show how uniformed Republican voters are these days...

I am tired of liberal policies born of fascist ideas brainwashing the people that countless men died fighting for freedom for, and that passionate Christian statesman set up a constitution to protect - FROM the very BIG Government liberals are imposing on us.

I rest my case.

ttg:

Wishing Bush got a better shot than just on Putins leg..

I'll check back again soon so we can diss each other the next exciting topic - when the skeletons of Obamas past association with William Ayers are pried open from the grips of the University of Illinois and topple from his closet. Shouldn't be as boring as slugging it out over the oil mess and definitely much more fun than the Reverend Wright thingy.

Cheers fellow patriot
