In response to a Democratic push to enforce Missouri's ethics laws and the simultaneous (but separate) formation of a Democratic "truth squad" (which both McCain and Obama campaigns utilize to respond swiftly to swiftboating lies) the following poorly-worded TV news report has sparked off a firestorm of Republican lies and bullshit from the right wing lie machine, lead by Matt Drudge of the Drudgereport.com.
The story confuses the two initiatives -- the first that Democrats are suggesting that (gasp!) ethics law be enforced -- and the second related but separate initiative that members of justice and law enforcement agencies who are Obama supporters are joining Obama's Missouri "truth squad."
If you're not careful it's easy to be confused and think they are one in the same. And the Republican hate squad loves stories that are easy to spin like this one because they prey on a section of the American electorate who typically can't or won't invest the time to understand the full issue and the "story behind the story" (ie "the truth").
These folks are easy to spin, so spin they will...
Smelling a prime opportunity to lie and bullshit the American electorate, the lying right wing attack machine, egged on by Republican governor Matt Blum, is once again using misdirection and outright lies by claiming that "Obama is using law enforcement to intimidate and stifle free speech."
Nobody, not a single person, has suggested that anyone will be prosecuted, and there is at least one Republican who will admit that:
Frank Donatelli, deputy chairman of the Republican National Committee, held a conference call with reporters Saturday morning while touring the state's offices for GOP presidential candidate John McCain.
In a telephone interview with the News-Leader, Donatelli admitted the Democratic prosecutors "haven't specifically said" they would use their prosecutorial powers on Obama's behalf.
Nonetheless, that hasn't stopped the right wing blogosphere from distorting and lying about the issue, claiming that "people will be prosecuted for disagreeing with Obama". One right wing blogger, Kim Priestap of our sister site Wizbang, has gone so far as to craft a lie right into the headline of a recent post, which she titled "Obama Camp Threatens to Prosecute Critics in Missouri".
Total bullshit. No threats have or will be made. Ethics laws will be enforced, but the truth squad is there to speak out to correct the Republican lies about Obama not being a Christian, or the lies about his tax plan, not to prosecute or silence anyone.
And now we have Priestap brazenly lying - an outright, flat out lie - in her headline.
McCain supporter Frank Donatelli, deputy chairman of the Republican National Committee:
Donatelli said prosecutors don't normally join campaign truth squads because their mere presence as a campaign attack dog "has a chilling affect on people's rights of free speech."
He's a Republican all right, you can tell by the fact that he's just lied to you.
But a review of McCain's own truth squads shows he has a district attorney from New Mexico and the South Carolina attorney general ready to respond to misleading ads from Obama and Democrats in their respective states.
Imagine that! McCain has a district attorney and Attorney General on his own truth squad, just like Obama in Missouri. But the opportunity to mislead the voters is too strong a lure for the most dishonest of the liars to ignore.
The Obama camp responds:
"It is the height of absurdity that Governor Blunt would try to deceive voters about the role of respected Missourians across the state who want to see this election be about the truth, not false attacks like the ones we've seen today," said Justin Hamilton, spokesman for Obama's Missouri campaign. "It's clear why Missouri voters are rejecting the kind of campaign that they're running."
And it is the height of asburdity for Kim Priestap to state in her post headline that the "Obama Camp Threatens to Prosecute Critics in Missouri."
Keep the faith, America. Only six more weeks of Republican lies before election day.
Soon they will only be lying about why they lost.
