Throw the Republicans in Jail Over Gitmo

Another example of Republicans' lying and deceit. They called them "enemy combatants," knowing all along that some of them were innocent. And an ex-Bush official is now spilling the beans:

Many detainees locked up at Guantanamo were innocent men swept up by U.S. forces unable to distinguish enemies from noncombatants, a former Bush administration official said Thursday. "There are still innocent people there," Lawrence B. Wilkerson, a Republican who was chief of staff to then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, told The Associated Press. "Some have been there six or seven years."

Wilkerson, who first made the assertions in an Internet posting on Tuesday, told the AP he learned from briefings and by communicating with military commanders that the U.S. soon realized many Guantanamo detainees were innocent but nevertheless held them in hopes they could provide information for a "mosaic" of intelligence.

Signs point to Rumsfeld and Cheney as the principals behind this:

In his posting for The Washington Note blog, Wilkerson wrote that "U.S. leadership became aware of this lack of proper vetting very early on and, thus, of the reality that many of the detainees were innocent of any substantial wrongdoing, had little intelligence value, and should be immediately released."

Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Vice President Dick Cheney fought efforts to address the situation, Wilkerson said, because "to have admitted this reality would have been a black mark on their leadership."

Wilkerson told the AP in a telephone interview that many detainees "clearly had no connection to al-Qaida and the Taliban and were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Pakistanis turned many over for $5,000 a head."

Trials to follow. There have to be trials or this isn't America any more.

herman:

Sometimes I wonder how long it will take to thoroughly cleanse the stains of deep shame that the Republicans have brought upon this country.

Allen:

While I have mixed thoughts about those prisoners at Gitmo, and no doubt some were innocent of any crimes, the crimes committed on them is against the laws of the US.

Both President BUSH and his VP bragged on TV that yes, they did order people to be tortured. President Reagan signed the treaty forbidding torture. There is no EXCUSE. If we are on nation of laws, which I have doubts about, someone needs to go to trial. And not the little people, but the ones that were in position of power to order such.

And yes, the right wingers will call it a partisan witch hunt, but in all reality, it isn't. Laws were broken, put the people on trial, present the evidence, and let a jury decide if they are guilty or not.

According to the laws (ha ha) any person in power who does not try and prosecute the so-called people who committed those crimes is also guilty of those same crimes. Kinda of a catch 22 situation, isn't it?

mightybrick:

I'm afraid it will take much longer to cleanse the stains of socialism that Obama is bringing upon this country.

Herman:

Mightybrick, you have nothing to fear except fear itself, as people much smarter than you (e.g., Albert Einstein) have advocated socialism. And nothing Obama has pushed for is nearly as socialistic as the policies of a fellow who had the honor of his portrait being placed on the dime by a grateful nation.

ke_future:

herman, you have nothing to fear from capitalism as people much smarter than you (ie pretty much everyone) have advocated the free market.

and you're right, FDR did a lot of socialist things. which is one of the reasons that our ecomomy is so screwed. actions he took directly lead the depression to be longer and deeper than it had to be. by 7 years. so excuse me for thinking that he wasn't so great.

Allen:

Ke, you might be right, but would you please explain how your party's "trickle down" has kept us out of this economic mess we are now in?

Tax cuts for the rich, while we are fighting two wars will cause the economy to grow, along with all those tax cuts you people want.

Well, your party borrowed and spent, and who is going to pay that back? The Dumo's tax and spend, paying as they go. Either way we taxpayers payers are screwed. But don't blame the Dumo's for our grand kids having to pay the debt back to China, because your Chimp borrowed the money from them to fight the oil war.

Reagan:

Are you suggesting that a "trickle up" economy is even remotely possible, Allen? How dare you type away about how horrible life is. Quit your crying, REALLY. Quit trying to be a champion for the world, unless you are honestly doing something. Life is good for Americans. Thank CAPITALISM for that. The only reason you have a shot at helping ANYONE is because of capitalism. Don't you get that?

Would you know if I were communicating this from China?

From India?

From Mexico?

Didn't think so. Again, thank capitalism for that. Your bitching and moaning would hold water if it came from years of life here:________.

I am willing to bet that progress isn't due to your personal effort.

Patrick:

I guess if Colin Powell's chief of staff says it is true than it automatically is. Whatever...

What I laugh about is how liberals worship FDR but never talk about how he interned Japanese-American CITIZENS for no good reason. It was not like the Bush administration rounded up Arab-Americans after 9/11. Don't pretend that you know the circumstances of the detainees currently at Guantanamo so don't even go there. There were far more there in the beginning and a process was set up and gradually detainees were released (and quite a few returned to committing acts of terrorism when they returned home) and what we are left I believe are about 300 detainees - the vast majority of which are not ones you want living next door to you. Is it a perfect system? No, of course not. But not one detainee was killed at Gitmo and I dare say far more injuries were inflicted on the people guarding these animals than were inflicted on the detainees themselves. The Bush administration's conduct in the war on terror far surpasses the conduct of administrations in prior conflicts. For some reason people feel we need to hold ourselves to even higher standards now and that is fine but one must recognize that this war is very different and we are fighting non-uniformed combatants who are not part of any one country or recognized army. They certainly do not follow the laws set up in the Geneva Convention while they have been accorded most of the protections provided by those standards even though they did not sign that particular treaty nor do they accord our people anywhere close to the same protections. So spare me your outrage because while the previous administration was not perfect by any means they kept our own citizens safe for over seven years which is more than I wager this current one will manage to do. They already seem to be doing a hell of a job destroying our country from within without the help of any outside terrorist organizations.

The far left rhetoric about the Bush administration more often than not exceeds the reality on the ground in just about every area. I actually welcome formal trials if it comes to that (where ACTUAL evidence would be needed to prove the charges because bumper sticker slogans do not a criminal case make) because that is what I expect from the Obama administration and the petty Democrats in Congress. While the economy crumbles they have time for the childish demonization of conservative talk show hosts and appearances on late night variety television shows. They certainly are spending money like there is no tomorrow with pretty much no effect thus far. They seemingly have no plans to adequately staff the Treasury Department with qualified people so Tiny Tim is left to fend for himself in a job that seems far beyond his competence and abilities. Hell, the job of being President of the United States seems far over Obama's head at this point and I see no evidence it will get any better. He can't even handle a simple visit from our country's closest ally Great Britain without looking like an absolute moron. Cheesy DVDs for a poor man going blind and that won't even play on his player back home! That was an outright embarrassment considering the thoughful gifts that were bestowed upon Obama and his family - they should be ashamed of themselves for treating our closest friend in the world so shabbily. The list of "what if Bush had done that?" moments is growing very long indeed barely two month in.

Lee Ward:

" The list of "what if Bush had done that?" moments is growing very long indeed barely two month in. "

Only among the Limbaugh imitators in the right wing blogosphere and the mentally challenged masturbators that populate their comment threads.

Pretending "the DVD scandal" means squat to anyone but the drooling Obama-haters shows that you think anyone else in the world cares... they don't.

But the GOP mental masturbators really get off on that stuff. "Oh look - Obama made a gaffe." People like you stood by quietly and hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens died because of the actions of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and company -- and you have the nerve to throw this crap at the wall?

That crap sticks to the wall in the right wing blogosphere, and the trolls gather 'round and worship it as if it had any real meaning...

If you had an ounce of humanity inside you'd repel at the thought of comparing Bush's war crimes to things like the grand dvd boo-hoo.

Patrick:

Give me a break Lee! Don't even think for a minute that there are not countless of Iraqi citizens who are grateful that we removed that murderer Saddam Hussein from power. And are we responsible for EVERY Iraqi that was killed during the war or might there have been countless other people that had a hand in it? I dare say the vast majority of Iraqis were killed by their own or forces acting in concert with them such as Al Qaeda in Iraq or Iranian-backed militias. So don't pretend that hundreds of thousands would not have been killed if Saddam had remained in power - he and his murderous sons were responsible for hundreds of thousands if not many more deaths of Iraqi civilians during their reign of terror. At least now Iraq has a chance at becoming a democratic nation which is no small feat. And bring forth your evidence of war crimes - I would love to see it. Saying war crimes and proving war crimes are two different things. You guys really do believe your own propaganda. The only reason why we have not seen the far left in Congress bringing such charges is they know they need proof and they don't have it.

And do you really believe that every anti-Bush rant had any real substance to it? I seem to recall when Bush fell off a Segway the left howled about how only that "idiot chimp" could fall off one of those things. Or just consider all the times Bush was compared with Hitler or a chimpanzee? The looney left piled on the EVERY small gaffe Bush made including any time he mangled a word or whatever. They did not coin the term Bush Derangement Syndrome for nothing. I am sorry you guys are going to have to put up with similar treatment for the next four years. This was the road you people decided to go down so be prepared to travel the same one. Look at the bright side: you won't have to do it for EIGHT years. Hell, we may not even be a superpower anymore by then. Now that is something we all have to live with...

Lee Ward:

Hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi's killed in this war, their family's lives shattered forever.

The Bush administration lied about "enemy combatants" locked up in Gitmo -- people they knew were innocent.

The president and his henchmen lied. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi's lost their lives... and it's been one lie after another.

Where is your patriotism, Patrick? Don't you love this country and what it once stood for anymore? Did we need the oil that badly that we are willing as a nation to throw away the principles we stood for before the Republican administration took office? Really? the oil was that important?

Patrick:

Don't question my patriotism, Lee. I know many people who have actually been there and have served in that war and they tell a VERY different story than the mainstream media and the left have fed us since it started. And don't pretend that a lot of people would not have been killed if there had not been a war to begin with - the horrors of Saddam Hussein's regime have been well documented. The UN sanctions only punished the average Iraqi more than it ever did Saddam - he went on with life the same way he always had. He killed any and everybody who opposed him and that does not even include the horrors he inflicted on the Kuwaiti people back in the early 1990s.

And who are you to question anybody's patriotism? You don't even know me! I know how the left are very touchy about having people question their patriotism but I am sensitive about that issue too. And that war was about far more than just oil and deep down you know it and won't admit it. How much oil are we even getting from the Iraqis these days, Lee? This was about ridding the world of an evil regime that harms other innocent people as it had done before and probably would have done again if given the opportunity. And yes, oil is important Lee even if you won't admit it. It is the lifeblood of the world's economy. I think inexpensive oil right now is the only reason we are not in a depression right now - it has created far more stimulus that Obama's trillions will ever accomplish.

Prove this administration lied Lee. A lot of Democrats voted for the Iraq War - just about EVERYBODY thought that Saddam had active WMD programs so for you to pretend that somehow Bush and Cheney were the only ones that knew that was not the case yet they went ahead with the war anyways is ludicrous. Put up some REAL evidence or shut the hell up! I am tired of people like you that recycle the same liberal lies and talking points over and over again in the hope to convince others that what you are saying is the truth. A lot of lies were told about other wars such as Vietnam (gee which party started THAT one Lee!) so for you to say the country was perfect until that evil Republican Bush came along is patently ridiculous. And as long as you are making stuff up let me offer some of my own assertions. Do you know for a FACT that those weapons were not smuggled out of the country to say Syria perhaps? One of Saddam's top generals has made that claim and wrote an entire book about it. Many other people feel that was entirely possible. Maybe if we had not fiddled around with the UN for so long in yet another effort at diplomacy (something Bush never gets credit for) we might have prevented just such an occurrence. There was no rush to war!

But for you to pretend that this country has never betrayed its principles before Bush was president is proof that you are not being honest with yourself. As an American, I am willing to admit that on many occasions we have not always acted in the best traditions this nation was founded on but unlike you I don't limit those actions to the last eight years. You have not addressed the interning of Japanese-American CITIZENS during World War 2. Is that something you are proud of Lee? Why won't you call FDR out for that criminal policy? It is no small matter to take freedom away from American citizens that did not do anything. We have far more proof of the wrongdoing of Gitmo detainees and you know it yet you choose to defend these animals and want to give them the same rights you and I have. Why don't you take these people in Lee if they are so innocent and pose no danger to anybody? Put up or shut up! LBJ lied us into Vietnam so where is your outrage there? What about issues like slavery (a practice stopped by a Republican named Abraham Lincoln) or civil rights (Republicans were responsible for giving blacks the right to vote) Lee? You would have far more credibility if you would not pretend that the only outrages that have ever occurred only happened on Bush's watch...
